Octavo's Crest Descent Theory
Once again, we have another theory from Octavo. It's his second crest theory, works out the "passing-down" of crests through the season, and is generally very interesting. :D
The basic idea is that while the crest-handing-down from Adventure 1 to Adventure 02 was very strangely handled, the alternative of fashioning 12 unique crests is rather daunting and rather defeats the uniqueness of each. To this purpose, I propose the following method for getting more mileage of the crests. Even if you're not feeling Crest-revisionistic, it's an interesting pattern I noticed. Here's the development:
First, I noticed (as it is trivial to notice) that Davis looks like Tai, TK looks like Matt, and Cody has a lot in common with Joe.
It occurred to me that this could be put into a table:
Tai Davis Matt T.K. Sora Izzy Mimi Joe Cody
And a table like that begs to be filled in; how convenient, we have 12 characters, and they fit very nicely. (I've always thought Ken was more a Crest of Knowledge than Cody was.)
Tai Davis Matt T.K. Sora Kari Izzy Ken Mimi Yolei Joe Cody
Now, this fixes the Crest descent, if you're so inclined. But why not take it further? It's not quite so slick, but let's try to apply it to Tamers.
Tai Davis Takato Matt T.K. Henry Sora Kari Rika Izzy Ken Mimi Yolei Suzy Joe Cody
But this doesn't really make me very happy. As I noted in my other crest theory, I've always seen Takato as essentially Kindness. Also, Henry doesn't really seem to follow in the Friendship vein. To this end, I propose this change:
C: Tai Davis F: Matt T.K. L: Sora Kari Rika K: Izzy Ken Takato P: Mimi Yolei Suzy S: Joe Cody Henry
Much better, in my view. Let's add Ryo, Kazu, Kenta, and Jeri. Problem: That makes 8. We only have 6 slots. Therefore, let's expand to a second column.
C: Tai Davis Ryo F: Matt T.K. Kazu L: Sora Kari Rika Kenta K: Izzy Ken Takato Jeri P: Mimi Yolei Suzy S: Joe Cody Henry
Yeah, Kenta's down for Love; so sue me, he's got a MarineAngemon. 'Nuff said.
Now, we still have four empty slots. If we want to fill them, we need Ai and
Mako, but also Kai and Minami. Now, I haven't seen their movie, so I may
get them wrong.
C: Tai Davis Ryo Kai F: Matt T.K. Kazu Ai L: Sora Kari Rika Kenta K: Izzy Ken Takato Jeri P: Mimi Yolei Suzy Minami S: Joe Cody Henry Mako
I'm not too sure at present about Ai and Mako's placement, and it may be that Kai and Kazu should be switched. The theory, though, I feel is sound; now, when have you known me to stop halfway? On to Frontier!
C: Tai Davis Ryo Kai Takuya F: Matt T.K. Kazu Ai Kouji L: Sora Kari Rika Kenta K: Izzy Ken Takato Jeri P: Mimi Yolei Suzy Minami Zoe S: Joe Cody Henry Mako
Now, this one's tricky. Some of the characters are easy, fitting directly into a classic pattern. But some slots will be hard to fill, because of the short supply of girls. Tommy, too, is hard; I think I'll call him Knowledge.
C: Tai Davis Ryo Kai Takuya F: Matt T.K. Kazu Ai Kouji L: Sora Kari Rika Kenta Koichi K: Izzy Ken Takato Jeri Tommy P: Mimi Yolei Suzy Minami Zoe S: Joe Cody Henry Mako J.P.
Finally, let's go through and make sure once more that they all make sense.
C-crest, aka Goggle Hero: Tai and Dai are freebies, as is Takuya. Ryo-Tamers
is all heroey despite no goggles, and I'm led to believe that Kai would fit
in well enough, too.
F-crest, Rival/Support: Matt and TK, and Kouji, are easy. Kazu fits in well,
too, I think. Ai... well, maybe. Tamers has a surplus of girls.
L-crest, aka Love Interest: Sora, Kari, Rika free. Kenta - must I go on? Koichi
- well, he's like Kenta without the little floaty angel-fishy-thing.
K-crest, Smart, Kind, but Sad: Izzy, Ken, easy. Tommy's smart enough, the computer
kid. Takato is definitely Kindness, and you don't get much more tragic than
Jeri in Digimon.
P-crest, aka Girly Girl: Pretty much all obvious. Zoe goes here rather than
under Love, 'cause she reminds me of Yolei more than anyone else.
S-crest, The Reliable Other Guy: Joe, Cody easy. Henry fits better here than
under Friendship, 'cause he's in no way like Matt. Mako, and then JP's a good
Sincerity.
The writers clearly have patterns that transcend the seasons. I rather look forward to seeing how Savers plays out with this; expect to hear more when I know where Masaru and company go!
