Octavo's Crests/Elements Theory
Octavo took up my challenge to send in ideas on the crests and elements theory (thanks, Octavo!), and here's what he sent me:
A theory is presented mapping both Crests and Elements onto the
Digidestined of all seasons. This is a question to which I've given
much thought; however, it breaks down in some places. The essential
insight, I think, is that due to some odd crest selection on the part
of the 02ers, they don't line up correctly to the elements.
Now, here's my version, procedurally. We will not only be mapping
crests up, we'll be mapping elements down from Frontier.
Note that there are ten elements in Frontier, and also ten Digital
World kids. (As much as I'd like to include Shinya Kanbara and Kenji
Himi, they didn't go to the Digiworld - putting them in essentially
the same category as Jun and Sam.) First things first - six are easy
to element, which of the others is which? (I'm taking the 4 extra DW
kids, even though they're not DD, 'cause they're easy and they should
have been used more. The cast was very shorthanded as it was.)
Actually, this puzzled me for a while, because I kept trying to make
Teppei steel. As noted on the site, he's more likely wood, which makes
it all work out.
(For reference, your site has Teppei-wood, Chiaki-water,
Katsuharu-earth, Teruo-steel. This works.)
Now that we have 10 elements, we need 10 crests. For greater
cross-season portablility, I shall use the reapproximated names. This
means Sincerity for Joe and Purity for Mimi.
Courage, Friendship, Love, Knowledge, Purity, Sincerity, are easy and
in. Furthermore, as much as they sometimes bug me, admit Light and
Hope.
Kindness really works, admit it; that makes nine. The conventional
next one would be Miracles or Destiny, and that I refuse to admit;
it's entirely nonportable. Instead, let's use the occasionally-rumored
Darkness. At least it's not multiply-redundant, and it's easy to match
with an element.
Ten crests, ten elements. But this next part was the trickiest of all,
and is the cornerstone of the whole strategy. See, Takato's a Crest of
Kindness, but an Element of Fire.
Let's name ten Tamers to use. This one's easy.
Takato
Henry
Rika
Ryo
Suzy
Jeri
Kazu
Kenta
Two more... let's use Ai and Mako.
Next, elements.
Takato=>Fire
Henry=>Wind
Rika... is tricky. I'll come back to her.
Ryo... quite the same. What sort of an element is a Cyberdramon?
Suzy=>Ice
Jeri... tricky, too. What's a Leomon? Fire's already taken.
Kazu=>Steel. What else for an Andromon?
Kenta=>Water
Ai=>Darkness. Give her Impmon.
Mako=>Light. Give him Calumon.
That leaves Rika, Ryo, and Jeri, plus Earth, Wood, and Thunder. If one
assumes that Leomon is Elecmon, Leomon's principal devolution, we can
call Jeri the latter; it's easy to call Renamon wood, and we'll let
Ryo be earth.
Crests, next.
Takato=Fire+Kindness
Henry=Wind+?
Rika=Wood+Love
Ryo=Earth+Courage
Suzy=Ice+?
Jeri=Thunder+?
Kazu=Steel+?
Kenta=Water+Sincerity
Ai=Darkness
Mako=Light. These two are elements and crests.
That leaves Friendship, Knowledge, Purity, and Hope. Since she can't
have Darkness, let's give Jeri Hope. That gives Suzy Purity, Henry
Knowledge, and Kazu Friendship. These aren't the conventional element
mappings at all!
(Finally:
Takato=Fire+Kindness
Henry=Wind+Knowledge
Rika=Wood+Love
Ryo=Earth+Courage
Suzy=Ice+Purity
Jeri=Thunder+Hope
Kazu=Steel+Friendship
Kenta=Water+Sincerity
Ai=Darkness
Mako=Light.
)
Next, Frontier Crests.
Courage for Takuya is easy, as is Purity for Zoe. Light and Darkness
will go to the obvious candidates. That leaves Tommy, JP, and the four
non-DD. We have Knowledge, Friendship, Hope, Love, Reliability, and
Kindness.
Takuya=Fire+Courage
Kouji=Light
Zoe=Wind+Purity
JP=Thunder+Kindness
Tommy=Ice+Hope
Kouichi=Darkness
Katsuharu=Earth+Friendship. He reminds me of Kazu.
Teppei=Wood+Reliability. It's the Power of Glasses.
Chiaki=Water+Love
Teruo=Thunder+Knowledge
And with that, the mapping's done. (One can't easily map down onto
Adventure, because of the character excess and the necessity of a
Crest of Truth, but I fear I've written overlong already.) It doesn't
fully satisfy me, but it's fine.
